To be grateful or not?

I keep a gratitude journal where I note down the things I am grateful for every day. And I have been doing this for the last three years. It helps you to stay conscious of the good things that are happening in your life and reminds you again and again that things may not be as bad as they appear.

As I reviewed the journal today, I was amazed at all of the great things that have happened in the last 365 days. There have been so many positives and also a couple of ‘negatives’ and I am grateful for all of them. I am grateful for the person I am becoming every single day (and year). I am grateful for the fact that even though I am not where I want to be yet, I am definitely not where I used to be. I am grateful for life and for my family and friends. I am grateful for you, yes you. Grateful that you are still on ground and making progress every single day, despite all the hurdles of everyday life.

It is very tempting to score the outgoing year a low, but don’t. So much is working in your favour, far more than you are able or will ever be able to realize.

The thing is, gratitude is in fact a personality trait. A character of the wise. Of those who understand that even the life we have is not ours and that we really have no claim to anything and that no one owes us anything. And it is a character that is worth honing.

This is where I drop my pen for the year 2017 and I leave with this quote by Seth Godin which goes, ‘if you are not drowning, then you are a life guard’. Hope you see better now.
